If you've never heard about reiki before, it may just be popping up on your newsfeed more than ever over the next few months.

The coronavirus pandemic has brought on a shift in the universe, mainly emphasized through individuals of all ages and lifestyles being more in tune with their emotions. Many have turned to reiki, a Japanese form of alternative medicine, also known as energy healing. Reiki first appeared in Japan throughout the late 1800s. Practitioners use hands-on healing through which universal energy has been said to transfer from practitioners' palms to patients, promoting mental and physical healing.

Through reiki sessions, patients can experience positive mind-body connections, which can reduce stress and anxiety. The power of mind-body connection has done wonders for patients who have suffered negatively from the added stress of the pandemic. According to a recent CBC article, reiki is offered in several hospitals to treat stress, PTSD, and insomnia and has been scientifically proven to relieve pain and offer comfort.

The heart of reiki involves feelings of compassion and kindness, which are then transferred to patients to regulate stress. For those overwhelmed with the new normal, turning to a holistic form of healing has worked wonders for stress levels.

2015 study also found that reiki significantly reduced pain, anxiety, and fatigue in cancer patients. The experimental group received five distance reiki sessions on top of their usual medical and nursing care. Those receiving reiki treatment scored lower on pain and stress compared to those who did not receive any reiki treatment.

Reiki has such a powerful impact on the mind-body connection and provides patients with an opportunity to slow down and take care of their physical and emotional state.
